Chapter 13

The man who walked into the room was wearing a gun in a shoulder holster, but he didn’t have time to draw it. He didn’t have time to do anything before Adam punched him in the face and he dropped like a stone to the floor.

Maja was impressed. His reflexes had been faster than hers.

She had no time to offer her congratulations. Adam grabbed her hand and hauled her toward the French windows. They were locked, but Maja decided this was no time to fumble with keys. With one hard kick, she left the doors hanging from their frame as the two of them burst through and hit the grass at a run. She heard shouts behind them and shots rang out.

Realizing the direction they were headed, she gave Adam a sidelong look of horror. “I can’t swim.”

“It’s time for your first lesson.”

The grass sloped steeply down to a deck next to the boathouse. Still holding her hand, Adam launched himself from the wooden platform into the water. Maja was in midair when she realized this was something he must have done many times.

As the cold, dark water closed over her head, there wasn’t much time for rational thought. I am invincible. It was worth a reminder. Because it sure as hell didn’t feel that way right now. As shock drove the breath from her lungs and water replaced it, she felt sure this was the one thing that would destroy her invincibility. Although she knew there was no other way of escaping Knight’s security guards—and she suspected now that Adam must have known all along this would be their escape route—she couldn’t see any way of doing this. Not when she didn’t even know which way was up anymore. She thrashed around, spluttering, kicking and holding on to Adam’s hand like a lifeline.

“Keep still. I’ve got you.” Adam’s voice and his strong hands under her armpits as he pulled her to the surface went some way toward calming her fears. “Lie back and let me do the work.”

Two opposing forces went to war within her. Part of her, the scared, irrational part, wanted to fight him, to try and get away. Another part, a deeper part, the one that felt connected to Adam, told her she could trust him despite her fears. That was the part she went with. Relaxing in his hold, she gave herself up and let him take over. It was a new sensation. Letting another person take charge wasn’t Maja’s way.

She felt Adam kicking out, propelling them along the shore in the same direction they had walked earlier. She heard more shots from the direction of the deck, and cringed each time in fear that Adam could be hit. Nothing happened. With every strong kick of Adam’s legs, they were thrust further from the possibility of harm. Still trembling with shock and cold, with her throat raw from choking on the water she had swallowed, she was never going to call this a pleasant experience.
