THE WHITE House Christmas party was the following Saturday. On Friday Beau headed for Jake’s. He had to stand for most of the journey, pressed between a pastrami-scented man and a martini-scented one who looked to be a congressional staffer, based on the price of his suit and the brand of his shoes. Beau wished he could ignore details like that, but he found it impossible. At least he was free to make fashion-related comments around Jake. It was such a relief after hiding the truth.

They pretended to watch an artsy French film after dinner, but they soon gave up on trying to focus on the subtitles and gave in to focusing on each other until they exhausted themselves and fell asleep on the couch. During the night they got into bed and slept gloriously late. Daisy spent the night with Toby.

In the morning light, Beau noticed Jake’s dress blues—hanging in the garment bag he’d lent him—on the back of the door. A dry cleaner’s tag hung from the bag’s zipper.

“I can’t wait to see you in your stunningly irresistible uniform again. Can I play with your sword?”

“You already are.”

Beau realized he did have his hand on Jake’s dick at that moment. It made Beau awfully happy, so it was difficult not to touch it.

“And I feel suitably patriotic about it too.” Beau gave it a squeeze, and Jake started humming the “Marines’ Hymn.” “But I’m talking about the other sword. When I saw you in that uniform, I thought about those recruiting commercials.”

Jake frowned. “Those are pretty powerful.”

“Is that why you joined the Marines?” Beau pulled his hand off Jake as the conversation grew serious.

“I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t influenced. But not by the uniforms, and definitely not by the haircuts. I loved the idea of being part of a small, elite military unit. If I was going to join the military, it had to be the toughest branch.” Jake had a faraway look in his eyes, as if thinking about a place he hadn’t visited in a long time.

“Why did you want to join the military?”

Jake shook his head. “Maybe to prove something to myself. Maybe to prove it to other guys. I wanted to belong in a way I hadn’t since I realized I was different and that meant I had a secret. I didn’t want to look any different from other guys, but if someone was going to hassle me for being gay, I’d be able to pound him into the ground.”

That surprised Beau. He hadn’t sensed that kind of violence or fear in Jake except that one time weeks ago.

Jake picked up on Beau’s thoughts. “I wouldn’t actually pound anyone. But no one with a functioning brain is going to risk calling a Marine a faggot.”

“Except maybe another Marine.”

“You’re not far wrong there.”

“Jake, I have a hard time understanding how you can do what you do, fly under incredible circumstances.” He thought back to the squadron party and how even though Jake’s
