Finn had been right – it was a brief conversation, which was fortunate as he was short-staffed and needed on the counter. Kylie and Lauren, it seemed, took very little interest in their husband’s business ventures other than how it affected them. ‘As long as they have the money for their shopping and lunch trips to Noosa, they’re happy,’ he said. ‘Lauren, I think, would do whatever Kylie told her to do.’

‘She always did at school too,’ I reflected. ‘Kylie was Queen Bee and Lauren her faithful assistant.’

‘If that’s the case, I don’t think things have changed … although I got the impression that while I was trying to get information about her husband, Kylie was trying to get information about you. Hang on a sec, I’ll just get these coffees.’

As he worked, I hung back at the edge of the counter. Finn had a grin and a word for everyone, seemed to know the regulars’ orders without being prompted and could charm a smile out of even the grumpiest early morning visitor. He flirted with them all, but it was light and playful and, as I watched, it occurred to me that the way he flirted with them and the way he flirted with me was different. Even though I’d told him it had to stop, knowing he was different with me filled me with a warmth I had no right to feel, and when he caught me watching him and flashed one of those grins that twinkled all the way to his eyes, that warmth set a chaos of butterflies free in my stomach.

‘Sorry about that,’ he said when he finally had a break. ‘One thing Lauren did ask me was what your intentions are regarding the shop. I hadn’t thought much about it until you said that Michael’s interested in buying it, and now I’m wondering whether he’s interested in buying it for Lauren to run.’

I contemplated that for a second. ‘It could make sense. Carmen was very interested in telling me what was wrong with it and mentioned Lauren was into crystals and the like. She probably wants to turn it into one of those designer wellness-type places.’ There was a queue forming again. ‘I’ll let you go.’

He passed me across a fresh coffee. ‘Have fun tonight, but be careful, eh?’

‘I will.’ I held up my cup. ‘Thanks for this; I’ll see you tomorrow.’
