Chapter Sixteen

Kaiya drove back to the resort, taking a circuitous route to ensure they weren’t followed. It was getting late, and they’d skipped lunch. She was starving.

“Assuming it wasn’t faulty wiring or something, how do you think Lucie, Boyles, or whoever set the fire knew where we would be?” Chase asked.

“I’ve been thinking about that,” Kaiya said. “Remember how crowded it was at Serena’s shop?”

“Yes.”

“It’s possible the perp was inside and heard us. Do you think the lady who bumped into me could’ve been Lucie?”

“I didn’t pay enough attention,” Chase confessed.

“She was wearing a scarf over her head and sunglasses. I didn’t get a good look at her.”

“How did she know we would be there?”

“That, I haven’t figured out,” Kaiya admitted.

The parking lot at the Serenidad Beach Club was nearly full. Kaiya found a spot, and after she parked, they headed to their bungalow to shower off the soot and smoke. Kaiya let Chase go first while she checked in with the office. She filled Luke and Logan in on what had happened. They reiterated their offer to send another agent, but she told them to wait. Chase was proving to be an admirable partner.

She also told them about the ruse of her and Chase being a couple and asked them to pass it to the rest of the COBRA Securities family. She didn’t want anyone to read about it online or see it on television and believe it. Her life was probably already being scrutinized by every reporter and pundit in America and abroad. That was a sobering thought. She had nothing to hide, but she didn’t want strangers poking into her business.

Thinking along those lines, she called her parents and told them what was happening. Her mom was ecstatic. “He’s so handsome,” she crooned. Her dad was proud. “Sterling Stryker. Wow.”

“It’s fake, remember?”

“Still,” her mother said.

Kaiya rolled her eyes. “You guys might want to take a vacation or something. Reporters might come calling.”

Her mother ignored her warning. “I’ll share some of your childhood pictures.”

“Mom!”

“Make sure to find the one when she was six and gave herself a haircut,” her dad instructed.

Kaiya slapped a hand over her face. She did not have a stellar childhood, photo-wise. She’d been a tomboy, and the picture her dad described happened because she’d wanted short hair like his. She’d taken scissors to her pigtails, cutting them off at the base. The result had been quite hideous.

A bolt of fear shot through her at the notion that Chase might see it one day. Gah! “You understand it’s a fake relationship?” When she got no response, she prompted, “Mom? Dad? Answer me.”

It took some convincing, but they finally agreed to keep the pictures to themselves and take off for a trip to Key West. She promised to call them when she returned home.

Pushing thoughts aside of her parents sitting for interviews with the media despite her warnings, she focused on picking out an outfit. Their laundry had been washed and pressed, and it was waiting for them when they returned to the bungalow, so she had choices.
