Chapter 4

The media is swarming outside. Even from the windows of our room I can see them. Their cars blocking the streets, their vans like Lego blocks, all in different colours and sizes. They’re not allowed to come inside the hotel, at least not until the wedding is over. One upside of having too much money is being able to book this whole hotel and massive security, just to have a ceremony, or wedding, depending on how you look at it.

I close the curtains again. No going outside for us today, luckily all the guests we invited came here yesterday, right before the media started camping outside.

A couple of the guests and also the people from the hotel have been swarmed by the media while they were on a quick trip or a cigarette break. I can’t stop that from happening, no matter how nicely, or not-nicely, I ask them.

I let out a sigh. Just a few hours and everything will be different, at least on paper. I’ll be the new official Alpha of the Powell pack, the eighth one in line, all first-born, and I’ll be Ethan’s husband, the first and only one. In our world, the Alpha gives their last name to the new generation, no matter if the Alpha is male or female. This way the names of the different packs keep more stable, which helps when you need to organise things. It even used to be that of any couple of the pack the next generation would get the last name from the highest ranked of the two. Even in cases of equal ranking, there was always one who ranked higher than the other, because of history, strength and power, or family ties to the Alpha. It helped stabilise packs and lineages. Survival of the fittest, or something like that.

A knock on the door makes me look up. “Max, you decent?”

“I never am. But I’m dressed.” I call out to my mum, who comes into the room, laughing.

“We’re gonna have to work on that, you know.” She winks. “My boy, my man, all grown up.”

I shrug. “I’ve been grown up for a long time.”

“In theory.” She smiles as she pulls on my shirt. “It’s weird. Handing over my power, after nearly thirty years. It’s gonna be an adjustment.”

I take her in my arms, her smaller frame hiding her power well. “I think I’ll need you for a while longer yet. You’re gonna have to teach me and Ethan a lot more. For example, how to throw these huge parties.”

“See, even an Alpha needs his mum.” She pats me on my back. “It’s all about experience. And when you became this big company owner, I had to learn it very fast. Throwing a party for three hundred people is a lost different from just fifty close friends and family.” She looks at me, her eyes serious. “Did Ethan invite his mum?”

I’m surprised by her trail of thought. “No. Why? Is she here?” I’m about to get angry and hunt her down as Mum takes my arm.
