Chapter Eight

The silence in his mind held the weight of exhaustion, before fading. When he was on his own again, Dilyn exhaled, turning his attention back to the female who needed him.

"Gwyr is coming," Dilyn said to Li Shen. "Favor? Don't... roast him or anything. He's a little emotional right now."

She cocked her head but didn't reply, otherwise unmoving. The Drake was coaxing his laboring sister onto her knees and forearms. Dilyn rose, backing away as the dragon shifted her weight.

Maeve watched, brow furrowed. "I don't know if this will work. It's a technique with human woman. The kneeling position should open her pelvis canal wider- if everything is shaped similarly."

"I mean... wouldn't she be closer to a bird? Or a..." Hell. What did he know? He couldn't even be weirded out by the whole experience. He was an Omega wolf having a baby soon.

The dragon moaned, a low whining rumble of sound. Dilyn inched forward again, pressing hands on her heaving side. He took several moments to find out her blood was the same composition as any other mammal, and methodically burned away traces of the herbs used to sedate her. She awoke slowly, becoming more alert- but also now experiencing stronger contractions and increased pain.

Dilyn gritted his teeth, ignoring her bleating. It tugged at him as a Healer- but it was his job to steel himself from the pain of his patients. He couldn't be concerned with her pain- he had to make sure she survived.

The baby began squirming again. He sank his senses a layer deeper- he didn't dare go as deep as he normally would, not when he was so close to birthing his own nameless child. But he listened to the dragonling’s heart rate. Erratic, skipping occasionally with distress.

"I don't think he's getting enough oxygen," Dilyn told Maeve, tone emotionless.

"With a human baby that could mean he is twisted in the canal," she replied, equally calm. "Can you apply any force?"

He considered. "I can... take control of her muscles. Have them work harder to expel the baby."

"If you do that and the baby is caught in the canal, you could snap its neck or strangle it."

Dilyn sank deeper. No choice. He examined her structure, bone and muscle, absorbing the skeletal map into his mind. It took time, time the pair didn't have. And by the time the knowledge rooted firmly, he was too deep... he needed Gwyr.

Dilyn flailed. This was why an Omega needed an Alpha. This was why nature had created the bond. He'd separated from his body, immersed himself in the healing and lost his way. He needed his anchor.

Gwyr!

His frightened voice lunged for the mate bond. Sharp attention, Gwyr's presence filling him with the rush of a burst dam.

Dilyn? I'm on my way. Nearly there.

Shock. How? It took me-

Do you really think I wasn't following you the whole time? I knew within a few hours you'd gone. And besides, you're slow.

Relief, gratitude.

I hope you told that female not to flame me.

They already had their lunch.
