Chapter 10

Victor

Richard surprised me when he showed up at my house. He had been crying and looked upset. I don’t know what had happened between him and his roommates, but I wasn’t about to turn him away. The night we spent together was amazing. We fell asleep in each other’s arms.

That morning, we woke up and I fixed some breakfast for Richard and myself. Nothing special. Eggs and sausage with biscuits. Richard looked happy. I wanted him to remain that way. He was an amazing man. I can’t imagine what the argument was about.

I wanted to be there to support him. I had to know what was going on though. I didn’t mind being his support crutch, but I couldn’t help him if I didn’t know what the problem was.

“Richard, I know you had a fight with your roommates last night. I don’t want to pry into it, but was it about us? Did you tell them that you were dating me and they got mad?’

My sweet Richard crossed his arms over his chest, leaning back in the chair. He shook his head. “No, it wasn’t about you. I haven’t meant to keep you a secret from them.”

“If the argument wasn’t about me, then what is going on? You came over here looking really upset. I want to understand but you need to tell me.”

I rose from my place at the table to clear the dishes. I placed them into the sink and would clean them later. I turned around to lean against the kitchen counter.

Richard sighed as he uncrossed his arms. His hands perched onto his lap. “Okay, but I didn’t want to tell you because I really like you. I thought it might change the way you feel about me.”

This was news to me. What kind of secret was he hiding that would make me think differently of him? I leaned against the counter more, my hands gripped onto the edge.

“I doubt anything you say will make me change my opinion of you Richard. I love you. That hasn’t changed since we started dating. You can tell me.”

Leaning back into his chair, he exhaled before he started to explain. “I. Well, you know that I had a boyfriend before you. David. He and I. It was foolish and we got together one night when my roommates were out. I was stupid and thought he loved me.”

This wasn’t new to me. He had told me about David before. I knew of him and, so far, he had not come around to try to win back Richard’s affection.

“Is this about him? Did he come back and that is why you had the fight with your roommates?” I was trying to follow where this was going, but I didn’t see the connection. Why would this have made him so upset?

“No, it is not about David trying to get me back. I messed up. I spent the night with him. Before I met you, I found out that I was pregnant. David didn’t want anything to do with me or the baby.
