Chapter 3

The drowsiness slowly lifts from my brain and I blink, but it doesn’t immediately help.

Then I feel Max move next to me and he leans over me, touching my face. “Welcome back.”

I try to smile, but I’m not sure if I do much. The fog is still too much.

“They said you might be groggy for a bit longer, but you should try not to move yet.” He takes my hand and sits next to the bed.

I want him to come closer, but as soon as I try to I realise why they didn’t want me to move. I squeeze my eyes closed, it doesn’t really hurt, but it does feel really weird. Which isn’t strange, as they just took a whole baby out of me, through my stomach. I try to sigh, but even that feels weird. “How is he?” Then my brain catches up and I realise that the baby is not here. “Where is he?” Panic shoots through me.

Max reaches out, touching my face, making me look at him. “He is good. He is with the nurses now, they need to keep a close eye on him for a bit. Since you were under general anaesthetic and everything. If everything is okay with him they will bring him to the room not long after you get back too.”

I nod, that makes sense. “How is he? What is he like?”

“He is beautiful.” Max smiles, a smile that he normally reserves just for me. I didn’t realise that just a short moment with our boy would do that to my big strong Alpha. “He is really tiny. Like, it’s hard to believe humans come in that size. They said he was fully healthy and that he is perfect otherwise.” Max grins. “I helped them bathe him.”

I laugh, which might not have been a good idea as I’m starting to feel my body more. “Don’t make me laugh.”

Max immediately frowns and reaches out to me, wants to touch me, but I take his hands.

“I’m fine. Just… The surgery… They did cut open my body so I’ll need to heal.” I breathe through the uncomfortable feeling.

A female nurse comes over. “How are you feeling?”

I’m not sure how to describe it. On the one hand, I’m feeling good, but I also feel like I’ve just been hit by a car.

“Are you still groggy?” She looks at the notes on her pad.

“No, that is mostly gone.” Which it is, from my brain, but my body still feels weird.

She nods and writes something down. “How does your body feel?”

“Ehh… Bruised.” I wince, very bruised.

“That will probably stay for a while longer. Don’t worry about that.” She smiles. “I’ll get the doctor in here and then you can get to your own room.” She goes back to her desk and picks up the phone.

“Don’t get scared if there are people who will want to see you as soon as you get there.” Max slightly smiles.

“Oh, god, no. I don’t think I can do that just yet.
