Chapter 6

Trevor

“Why would I even think of doing that after the best sex of my life?” Kyle asked me with wide eyes, his heart racing under my chest.

I wanted to groan at how stupid I was. Who blurted that out? Nice way to handle an already bad situation. I swallowed loudly and went to pull away, except he tightened his arms around me.

“Oh no. You’re not going anywhere until you explain, Trev.” I started shaking and he cussed under his breath. “Baby, it’s okay. Whatever it is, I promise you that I would never hurt you.”

“I claimed you,” I said so quietly I barely heard myself. “I didn’t mean to. I didn’t realize I was doing it until after I came.”

“The oil,” he mumbled, not making it a question, but I answered it anyways.

“Mating pheromones. That’s how a garter snake mates. I–I didn’t remember that until a–after. I was ten when it was explained to me and that was the last time I talked about it with anyone. My parents weren’t all that specific but I thought it was more of a conscious decision than my subconscious wanting to mate you.”

His eyes practically bugged out of his head then and he let me go before moving me off of him. Shit. I really said something wrong then. What had I said that was worse than before that now he was pulling away? He rolled to the edge of the bed and sat there with his head in his hands, shoulders tense.

“Kyle? Please say something?” I whispered after a few minutes.

“You didn’t even want to claim me, Trevor. What is there to say?”

I gasped in shock. “That’s not what I meant!”

“Then what did you mean? Accidentally claiming me is one thing. But accidentally claiming me when you don’t really want me is something so much worse and hurts.”

“I want you,” I whimpered as I crawled over to him and wrapped myself around him, kissing his neck. “I was thinking earlier how lucky I’d be if things could really work out with us. You’re amazing, Kyle. It’s just really soon. We’ve not even dated or remotely discussed this. I just meant I haven’t had the actual thought of yes, I want Kyle to be my mate forever yet.”

“So you’re not sad it happened, just that it happened before we had more time together and without your asking me?” he hedged. I thought about that a moment, bouncing it around in my head.

“Yes, that’s exactly what I mean. It’s not fair to you and I’m sorry. I would never have intentionally taken away your choice like that, not in a million years. And it’s extra not cool because this was our first time after barely knowing each other. I just did the one thing to you that I’ve spent my life being. I’ve trapped you.”

“You didn’t do it on purpose, right?” His voice was so quiet, distant, and sad.

“No, Kyle, never. I’ll tell Valter and he can use whatever extra senses he has to let you know I’m telling the truth.
