Developing your skills for the prescribed orchestral work

Listen to more than one recording of the work, including performances on historical instruments if available

Go to a live professional performance if you can. If not search online for a good quality orchestra: either one from a major city such as the London Symphony Orchestra, or one of the specialist period instrument groups such as the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment

Get to know the printed score well. Remember that the layout might look different if you have an extract in the exam

Follow the score when you listen. For variety choose different sections to focus on. Hum along with solo or bass parts so that you get to know the piece well

If you have a spare score or photocopy (enlarge it to A3 to get the print to a good size), highlight important features. Write on comments, symbols or diagrams for your revision

Make sure that you are familiar with the various terms and notations used in the score and understand the significance of each. Also check that you understand the implications of any transposing instruments that are involved

If the music stops, can you explain what comes next? Can you describe the music that comes before any passage you choose?

Learn the structure of the work, so that you can locate any passage. Knowing the keys will also help you place some sections

Learn how to work out chords from a full score. Look at the bass first, then check the notes in the other instruments, including any transposing instruments. Does your chord sound as if it might be correct?
