While I would have given nearly anything to have gone straight to Cassandra’s apartment after I’d made the drive back over to the Dreamers Academy, in the heart of Acrefort, I didn’t. Alex had been there, and I knew it was enough, at least for now. There had been other things on my mind, other ways I needed to help.

The rain had picked up again by the time I’d been dropped off on the outskirts of the campus. It was late then. The streetlights were the only thing really lighting up the streets and sidewalks around me. Most of the buildings at the school were dark.

Somehow, Alex and I had managed to get some semblance of information from Cassandra to be able to help me. I knew her path back to the apartment she lived in had taken her in the direction I had started to head. While I’d never actually visited her home, I knew roundabout where it was and was fairly certain of the ways she’d gone to get back.

I didn’t really know what exactly I was going to do, how I would remotely be able to help in searching for what the person who had attacked her had taken from her. But I knew, both by the fear in Alex’s voice when she’d said it, and how many times I’d noticed her fierce protection of the bag, I didn’t have a choice but to search anyway.

It had been a relief, at least, this clearly didn’t seem to have anything to do with my father. At least, I was highly doubtful. Seemed as if it was some shitty human being who had wanted to steal something of value for whatever reason or other. Why they thought it would be inside the ratty bag of hers, I had no idea. But the idea someone had attacked her like they had, had put her in danger, took me to another plane of existence.

If I found them, I wasn’t sure what I would do.

My walk took me all the way from where I’d been dropped off, circling around a portion of the school campus and then the entire way back to Cassandra’s apartment. I would have been more distracted by how unsettling this part of town was and how annoyed I was with myself I hadn’t forced her out of this place sooner. Instead, as I drew up to her building, I was more concerned I had nothing for her.

If I walked into the apartment without anything, if she knew whatever it was she was clinging to so desperately was still missing, I feared what Alex said would be true. And I didn’t think, despite everything about my family and the things which had happened over the years, there had been few times I’d felt more unsettled.

As I rounded the corner of the building, dreading those last few steps I had to take to get to her apartment, I noticed something. It had been subtle, and I might have missed it entirely had I not been looking in the right direction at the right moment.
