If small residential units in the community are to create client-centred care, then the role of front-line staff is vital. They provide the bulk of the care and are expected to develop an intensive caring role, often with residents who can provide only limited feedback. The success of these new units depends, to a great extent, on the successful management and support of the frontline care staff.

Within social work, supervision is a major form of staff management and support. Supervision is best developed within field social work, where it fits in well with the dominant form of service provision, individualised case-work. Supervision does exist in residential work, but given the differences in the settings, it needs to be supplemented. The supervisory process needs to be clearly linked to group dynamics through mechanisms such as team meetings. The unit leader will play a crucial model in providing a model for other staff and facilitating positive group relations.
