“Are you okay?”

I looked up at Aimee, thankful to have her for a friend and sister-in-law. Living with the Sinclair men had its challenges, but we were glad we had them. Declan and Carter would do anything for their loved ones. I could only hope they could pull off a miracle and bring Karas back home.

I sat cross-legged on the floor of the guest bedroom, looking at the pile of scattered pictures. Bits and pieces of happy memories. I wouldn’t dare leave home without a picture of my baby. Though I had hundreds on my phone, I had nearly as many in print. With a father whose livelihood depended on a camera, there was always one close by our little girl.

Aimee sat down beside me, picking up one photo at the corner. She turned it this way and that as she looked at it from different angles.

“I don’t think there’s a bad angle on that little one. She’s so photogenic. That face. Those eyes. And that smile!”

I angled my head, leaning over to see which picture she referred to. “Oh, that one. Yep. She was a character that day. I had taken her to The Studio. We were meeting Declan for lunch. One of the photographers, Jon, had a cancellation. When he came into the office to tell Declan that one of his appointments needed to reschedule, he fell in love with Karas. She had him completely charmed within ten minutes, and he asked us if he could take her picture. She was such a little ham. No tears. No hesitation. She took to the camera as easily as her daddy.”

I clung to the memory, wrapping it with my love and holding it close to my heart. I no longer felt anxious or sad, just numb. It wasn’t acceptance that Karas was gone, for I would never let her go, even if I never again held her in my arms. She would forever be mine. Her laughter traveled through my bloodstream giving me the hope that she would return. I still believed that we’d see her again. I had to.

“They shouldn’t be too long. They’re meeting Falcon. I’m not sure what they’re planning, but I’ve seen for myself, when most have given up, they come through.”

Aimee put her arm around my shoulder as she offered me hers. I took the invitation, lying my head down and closing my eyes. I was so tired. Every day it was an effort to simply breathe. My body moved through invisible pools of water, resistant to each step forward with limbs weighted with grief. All I wanted to do was sleep. I wanted it to be a bad dream, hoping that at any moment I’d wake up to see eyes that looked like mine.

“Why don’t you go lay down for a little while? I’ll tell him to wake you as soon as he gets back.”

I nodded. Sleep was something I couldn’t seem to get enough of. I pushed myself off the floor. “I’ll be down soon.
