Chapter Five

Adam watched for the train in the distance. He knew it was going a lot faster than it seemed but he still felt like it was taking forever for it to get to him. Mia was pleased when he placed the ad but stunned and a little nervous when he said he was bringing not one but two women from the East. “How is that supposed to work?” She asked. “They aren’t both coming to be my bride, silly girl.” Adam had responded. “Just the one, Emma is her name. The other is her piano teacher, Sophia.” “A rich girl from Virginia is bringing a servant with her? How is that even possible that you could have agreed to such a thing?” Adam sighed. “Mia, you were the one who suggested I place the ad in the first place. Now you question my judgment? Isn’t it a little late for that? And besides, it doesn’t sound to me like Sophia is Emma’s servant. It sounds more like they are friends and Sophia is wanting to keep Emma safe.” “I thought the ad would be a good idea, yes. That was before I realized you would accept a girl and her servant.”

I’ve already sent them two train tickets. They will arrive tomorrow.” Mia had not approved. He didn’t care. Emma sounded very nice from her letters. She was also quick to humor, which endeared her to Adam immediately. She seemed like a friendly girl who just wanted a new life, one that she thought Adam and Cameron could provide for her. He had plenty of room in his farmhouse for Sophia and was more than happy to have another caregiver for Cameron. That also meant that Cameron would eventually learn the piano. There was nothing wrong with that, in Adam’s book. Finally, the train was pulling to a stop in front of him. He stood up from the bench and pulled his hat down on his head, watching as the windows passed, trying to catch a glimpse of the people on the train. He had no idea what Emma looked like, other than her description of herself. She had dark blue eyes, long blond hair, and a slender figure. He hadn’t received a photograph of the girl in her letters.

He pulled on the brim of his hat nervously, waiting for the train to come to a complete stop. He prayed he would be satisfied with the woman and that she would be satisfied with him. He knew her when he
