Chapter 11

Parker was beyond frustrated. His mom was still spewing her religious passages, but she wasn’t acting irrationally like she had been previously. Chastity was sick as dog with morning sickness that seemed to last all day. But even worse were the reports he’d been hearing about Jesse.

The whole town was abuzz with how Jesse was no longer wearing makeup, hardly brushing his hair, and several times he was found to be wearing the same clothes as the day before. Probably the hardest thing to believe was the man was only wearing sweatpants with either a T-shirt or a sweatshirt.

All he wanted was to go to Jesse and shake him out of his funk. That Parker was responsible for Jesse’s state of mind was driving him crazy. None of this was fair. How was he supposed to stay away from the man he loved when Jesse was hurting so badly from Parker’s rejection?

Needing to get his mind off his life at this point, Parker decided to take Landon to pick out candy for Halloween. It was something they had to do without his mother knowing, as she believed Halloween was the Devil’s night and kids shouldn’t be dressing up to honor him.

With most of Cedar Falls being rural, the shops on Main Street had started the tradition of closing early Halloween night and handing out candy. That way those who didn’t live in neighborhoods could bring their children into town for a night of fun.

The artisans were allowed to hand out candy along some of the empty stores on Main Street so they could join in on the fun. Distracted by everything going on, Parker had placed the candy order wrong and shorted himself by ten bags.

Browsing the candy aisle, he let Landon pick out the candy and quickly paid for it. As they were heading back out to their car, he saw Ethan in the parking lot. The need to be sure Jesse was okay was too strong for Parker not to at least ask about him. “Ethan.”

As soon as Ethan heard Parker call out, the man’s body tensed. Parker ignored the signs that Ethan didn’t want to talk to him. He needed answers and he was going to get them.

Striding quickly, he called out to Ethan once more when he was a few steps away. “Ethan. Is everything all right?”

That was when he first realized Ethan wasn’t alone. Partially blocked by Ethan stood a man who looked like a stiff wind would blow him right over. Parker knew his jaw dropped as he took in the too skinny figure with long hair tied back in a ponytail. Jesse. He’d heard the rumors going around, but Parker hadn’t believed he’d ever find Jesse wearing sweatpants and a plain long-sleeved T-shirt with no makeup.

Speechless, Parker just stood there looking at what he’d done to the man he loved. As much as he wanted to stop Ethan when he started to pull Jesse toward the car, Parker was too stunned to move.
