“What do you see?”

Neville observed Brandon as he combed through the wreckage of the Newman house. Aside from the bomb fragments and the remnants of the detonator, they hadn’t found any other substantial physical evidence.

“Both blasts originated under the back porch,” Brandon mused. “Or at least, that’s where most of the damage is.”

He wasn’t wrong. The rear of the house had been decimated. Blue and white tape cordoned off the worst affected area, but pieces of the home were strewn all over the backyard.

“What else?”

Brandon stopped moving and carefully surveyed the yard. He pointed at various pieces of debris and narrowed his eyes. Another look at the house and he frowned. “Whoever did this didn’t mean to destroy the house. The explosion was meant to scare, to make people run away but not kill them.”

“I’m no expert,” Neville said, toeing a broken bit of board out of the way, “but I have to agree. The extensive fire damage, in my opinion, was unintended.”

“But you’re not a fire investigator,” boomed a voice from behind. Neville turned to find James Hollywood Wright leaping over the back fence which had been blown over by the blast. The former soldier had made his way into the local fire service. “Good thing I am.”

“Investigator?”

Hollywood grinned his famous playboy smile and shrugged. “Well, I’m training to be, but I do agree with your assessment. Whoever did this wanted to get the occupants of the house out. The question is why?”

Neville ground his teeth. “Scott’s invention. They were after the file. With Val and the kids out of the house, anyone could come in and search.”

Brandon frowned. “You could accomplish the same thing with a gas leak.”

“Too temporary, and if had been ignited, there’d be no house left.” Hollywood suggested. “Do we know what this invention is?”

Neville hesitated, then shook his head. The less Hollywood knew, the better. “All we know is that it’s a damn good chance Rachel Newman was murdered for it, and if we don’t find Scott, he’s next.”
