That year I spent so much time staring at the gifts under the tree with a scowl on my face because my mom wrapped the backpack without a box, so it was in the shape of the backpack, so I knew what it was and I was like, This is bullshit! Give me the yellow patent-leather smiley-face backpack! Life was tough. This was also the phase of glitter, metallics, and silver eye shadow. I’m glad it’s over.
