HOLY ROLLERS

“Holy Rollers” was my first real sale, and its publication as a chapbook (via now-defunct DarkTales Publications) played a big part in giving me the confidence to keep rockin’ and rollin’ with this storytelling stuff.

This piece was born, naturally, from an idea that came to me when I was accosted by two door-to-door evangelists. You know the type. Strangely enough, the two men who inspired “Holy Rollers” did not come knocking at my front door, but upon my car window….

I was nursing a terrible toothache that day, I remember. My wife had stopped at the grocery store to pick up a few things, and while she ran inside I reclined in the passenger seat, alone with my suffering. Long story short, Glenda had only been gone for a minute or two when I heard a knock at my window, sat up with an annoyed frown, and promptly wished I hadn’t.

I don’t really have to get into the rest of it. You know their routine. They offered me some of their literature, I did my best to be polite while wishing they would take a long walk off a short pier.

In the end, though, I’m glad those two fellows approached me. Because a really cool tale of proselytism taken to the nth degree came out of the encounter

“Holy Rollers” will soon see adaptation as a short film. Here’s hoping the original tale make you hesitate for a second or two the next time someone comes knocking at your front door with wide white smiles and Bibles in hand…
