The Results: Competition Generates More and Better Information for Voters

The findings are clear but nuanced. They show that although the relationship between electoral competitiveness and the quantity of information that voters receive in House races is largely linear (i.e., it increases steadily as the competitiveness of the race increases), the relationship between competitiveness and the quality of that information is of a different nature. Specifically, there are diminishing returns to competitiveness. This is good news for people who want to improve campaigns because it means that the road ahead is not so steep; modest improvements in competiveness make a significant difference in both the quantity and quality of information that voters get. And since most House elections in this country are “safe,” many people would benefit from such reforms. The findings, which I describe next, also suggest that although voters might receive more information in highly competitive contests, the quality of that information is no better than it would be in only moderately competitive races.
