Chapter 8

Hercules kept watch over the house from the second-floor balcony as party plans got underway. He watched Rory and Sissy dart around like the sky was falling. Iben and Zack had made themselves scarce, and Djal was with Ares, implementing the added security measures they had devised.

Hercules had been given the duty of watching over the house. Sam and Levi were assisting him, both men currently patrolling outside, one in front of the house, one in back of the house. Hercules had insisted that he be the one inside the house so that he could keep an eye on Rory. He wasn’t going to let the man out of his sight if he could help it.

Hercules and Rory had unfinished business and Hercules planned to finish it just as soon as he could get the man alone somewhere—preferably somewhere with a soft mattress. But he wasn’t picky.

Anywhere would do.

Hercules waited until he saw Rory head upstairs to shower and get ready for the party, and then he contacted Apollo to come take over for him. They had two hours before the party started and everyone arrived. Hercules planned to have things settled between him and the sexy little wolf by then.

When Apollo walked into the house, Hercules nodded to his brother then headed down the walkway to Rory’s room. He quickly slipped inside the room, closing and locking the door behind him. He didn’t need any interruptions.

Hercules could hear Rory singing from the bathroom, the shower running, and knew he had a few minutes before Rory came out. He pulled off the specially made black leather vest he always wore, the one that carried his concealed P911 handgun, and placed it over the back of a chair. He hoped he wouldn’t need a weapon to talk to Rory, but keeping it close at hand was always a good bet.

Rory did have a temper.

Hercules loosened the top buttons on his shirt and rolled up his sleeves. He rubbed his hands down over his face then planted them on his hips as he stared out the window toward Aberdeen Lake.

The lake was beautiful. It was nestled in the trees at the bottom of some cliffs that led up to a high mountaintop. The cliffs were only on one side, though. Two sides were thick with trees. The last side of the lake had a marina and several buildings.

Although it was called Aberdeen Lake, it was actually an inlet off of Aberdeen River, which was just beyond the village. The river ran down from the mountain glaciers. It brought water to the entire valley. Once it passed the village, it went for about twenty miles and then dumped into the ocean. The inlet was about two miles long and maybe a mile across.

The village was small, not more than a couple of dozen businesses. But they had everything from a restaurant and sidewalk café to a general store, marina, tavern, and even a library. There were also several smaller businesses, mostly clothing and gift stores, but everything was pack operated.
