Strengths

France had the technological as well as the economic and industrial capabilities to manufacture and to fully equip a modern army.

On the whole, the French army was larger than the Wehrmacht even after the German massive rearmament.

Although small in comparison to the Third Reich, in absolute numbers, France was one of the largest states in Europe with enough manpower to compete in industrial or military endeavors.

Together with the Belgians, Dutch, British, Polish, and Czechs, France had the reservoir for a military force at least twice the size of the Wehrmacht. In terms of manpower resources, this European, potential anti-Nazi block, could form, in the mid 1930s, a coalition the size of the United States of that time.

The Maginot Line formed a strong defense line along the eastern border, blocking the Germans’ way into France, and enabling the French to save manpower and to allocate the rest of the army in places like the Ardennes, where the Wehrmacht would have to be stopped.
