Chapter Ten
My house had been aggressively clean since Kit’s arrival. Besides baking, he apparently spends his long, sleepless nights scrubbing, dusting and wiping.
I watched, helplessly, as Kit-things started taking over. It began innocently enough, with a few beds and scratching posts for Winston. The scratching posts were much more elaborate and fanciful than I would have gotten. A scratching post was, by definition, supposed to be destroyed, but Kit had bought everything with his own money, and it was his cat.
There was a castle with a working drawbridge and detachable towers, a pirate ship, and a cat condo that reached most of the way to the ceiling. If I were a cat, I would have been afraid of falling.
Winston seemed to have the same fear. I only ever saw him nest on the lower platforms. I liked seeing him draped over the castle and the ship like some sort of enormous cat-monster.
Boo had taken to spending most of his time in my bedroom, which suited everyone. Especially Kit. I still hoped they would eventually find some sort of zombie solidarity or at least be able to tolerate one another.
After I didn’t complain about the cat paraphernalia, Kit brought home art. He hung most of it in his room, but then he said he had extra and my walls were bare. Which was true. The only art I had was from my dad.
Kit showed me the art to get my approval.
“Well…I don’t hate it.”
“Good enough. Where do you keep your tools?”
“In the basement.”
He shot me a look.
“I’ll get them.” I didn’t ask how he’d hung his own art without going into the basement.
The next step was patterned throw pillows for the couch and armchair and little matching blankets. I thought the blankets were too small to be practical, but because Kit spent more time in the living room than me, I surrendered that territory to him.
The assault on the kitchen followed. Little Starbucks gadgets started appearing. If Kit had been so inclined, he could have opened a franchise in what was increasingly becoming our house. I rationalized this, too. Kit was doing most of the cooking lately; he seemed to have a need to make food even if he couldn’t eat it. I can cook, but most of what I make is fairly basic, especially because I’m usually exhausted after class, if I have time to come home and eat at all. Ramen doesn’t require much in the way of kitchen appliances, so I’ve never had many.
Soon, everywhere I went in the house I could see signs of Kit’s influence. I found I didn’t mind. In fact, I liked it. The notable exception to his grand redecoration scheme was, of course, the basement. He hadn’t been down there since I had resurrected him. He even made me go down and get things from the deep freezer when he was cooking. I was glad he was comfortable enough to decorate beyond his room.
I was glad it seemed he was going to stay for some time.
