In the summer of 2009, she got a chance to go back to California—the second trip of a lifetime. She went with my sister, brother-in-law, and two-year-old nephew for a vacation. She flew on a plane again, which I know she had missed. She often talked about flying and how the clouds looked when you passed through them and how it felt sitting on top of them—hearing this always fascinated me. Her love for flying came through in her eyes as she would describe it.

My sister recalls the visit, remembering how happy she was to relive some of her life from a little over forty years ago. From the plane to sandy beaches to riding a ferry in San Francisco Bay to standing under a redwood tree, she got to go back where she lived a long time ago. They drove by Mr. and Mrs. A’s mansion, memories flooding. The house was still gorgeous and palace-like. The smells, the sun, and everything she missed was just as it was, still there waiting for her.
