SEVENTEEN

That night, I arrive at my apartment after work to find Jack’s Jeep Wrangler parked across the street.

Damn. It’s Thursday. He usually comes to see me at my apartment on Tuesday and Thursday nights. I am not in the mood to see him tonight. Once a week is enough for me.

It really bugs me when Jack parks his car right across the street from my place. It’s like he’s putting himself on display for the whole world to see, practically shouting out that he’s having an affair. It’s frustrating, to say the least.

Without fail, he shows up at my apartment every Tuesday and Thursday night. And you can bet that it usually leads to some steamy bedroom action. The guy is always insatiably horny and can't seem to keep his hands off me. Meanwhile, after a grueling ten-hour shift, the last thing I feel is sexy or in the mood. I just feel hot and gross, to be honest.

To make matters worse, I made the mistake of giving him a key to my apartment. Now he lets himself in whenever he pleases. Ugh, I wish I had never handed him that damn key. It’s become a constant reminder of a choice I regret.

I park my car and make my way over to my front door. I pretend to unlock it just in case someone is watching. I don’t want anyone to think I keep my door unlocked. So, I perform the charade of unlocking the door.

Walking in, I see Jack sitting on my couch in the same spot I kissed Dean last night. I don’t feel guilty about kissing Dean in the slightest. We both knew there wasn’t any chemistry between us. Sometimes two people need to kiss each other to see if they have chemistry. In our case, not so much.

Jack looks up at me from the couch. “I put your mail on the kitchen table.” I have a mail slot in my door that my mailman puts the mail in. Jack thinks he is doing me this big favor by moving my mail from the floor to a table twenty feet away. If he wants to impress me, he needs to wash my dishes or clean my bathroom. Moving my mail twenty feet isn’t anything to feel chivalrous about.

“Are you hungry?” I ask. “I’m starving.”

“No, I ate a big dinner.”

“I know you prefer Tawny’s cooking over mine.”

Jack smiles at me and doesn’t respond to my statement. What a jerk. I shake my head at him and go into the kitchen. I take a quick look at my mail—just bills and advertisements.

Jack scurries to the kitchen after me knowing I am irritated with him. It only takes him two minutes to bug me. This might be a record even for him. “Don’t be mad, sweetie. Tawny cooks, you know, she actually uses the oven. You, well, microwave frozen dinners. I know you work real hard at your job, so I don’t expect you to cook.”

“Well, I’m microwaving me a frozen pizza and you can’t have any of it, so don’t even ask.
