“THIS FELLOW Lane may be pretty,” Jake said as he backed his sedan out of the parking lot, “but he’s not too smart.”

“Nope,” I agreed.

Jake fed gas to his four-cylinder automatic. The sedan crested the hill, then started to coast down the steep road that led almost straight to the Pacific Ocean.

“Even if the guy told the truth and didn’t cheat that night,” Jake continued, “accusing the woman you love of murder is a sure path to romantic rejection.”

“He’s going to be sleeping alone for quite some time,” I agreed. “Maybe he should get a cat for company.”

“Or a dog,” Jake countered.

“Perish the thought.” I shuddered hard enough that Jake could see I was kidding. We’d hash out which pet was better, cats or dogs, later. Right now I had something else on my mind.

“It’s weird, though.”

“What is?”

“I was under the impression that Nancy Moss actually caught Lane in bed with Ms. Welch.”

“She did.”

“Not in bed, though,” I countered. “Nancy said she only saw the woman from the back as she ran from the room.”

“You’re right. She never saw the cheater’s face.”

“Nancy assumed it was Welch. Maybe the late-night enchantress had the same hair color or general build.”

Jake drummed his fingers on the wheel. “Hell, Nancy didn’t even see Lane in the room. She thought he ducked out just before she got there.”

“But he said he was downstairs getting a book.” I shifted in my seat. “According to the Moss housekeeper, Welch emphatically denied the affair in front of Papa Moss.”

“Is the Moss housekeeper one of your customers?”

“She is now—” Oops. I hadn’t exactly told Jake about my little chat with the housekeeper, had I? Maybe he wouldn’t pick up on my slip.

I slid an eye toward the driver’s seat. Jake’s free hand inched toward the cuffs on his belt. The instinctive reaction of a lawman who’d just caught a suspect in a lie.

Well, hell.

“If she’s not a customer,” Jake asked, “how did you happen to chat with her?”

I cleared my throat. “I might have accidentally dropped by the Moss house the day after Ms. Welch was killed.”

“Accidentally, huh?”

Oh yeah, Jake was onto me.

“They have a cat,” I protested. “I wanted to sell them some of my world-famous tuna/salmon bites.”

“Right. You drove a half hour out of town to knock on the door of a millionaire with ties to Welch just to hawk your wares to the housekeeper?”

“She’s a very nice lady,” I countered before caving in. “I suppose the topic of the wedding came up, but only in casual conversation, mind you.”

“Of course.”

Who knew the sheriff could smirk like that? Should I tell his sister about his bad manners? No. Ratting him out wouldn’t increase the odds of getting Jake into my bed.

I flashed on a vision of Jake lying over me, my legs spread wide as his cock pumped in and out of my body….

I grabbed on to my dirty mind with two mental hands and wrenched it out of the gutter. “If Lane didn’t make nookie in his room, who did?”

“Maybe her brother snuck in a date.
