Documenting and Making Language Visible

When learning new words or names, it is often helpful to write words down or see them written. This becomes especially important when teaching ELLs. Written words can serve as anchors for the conversation. While native speakers who are more proficient in English may follow along with every word or every other word of the conversation, certain words or phrases may cause learners who are less proficient in English to get stuck and miss out on some of the conversation. We suggest that when new terms are used or learners contribute new ideas to the conversation, educators should document the words on a small hand-held white board, a pad, or on an index card so that all members of the group can see them. This allows learners to return back to them whenever they need to in order to remind themselves of the words and ideas previously discussed. This practice also helps students of all levels of proficiency contribute and feel included in the conversation. When we encounter students who are not confident enough to share orally, we encourage them to write a response or ask if we can share their response with the larger group. When moving from one work of art to another, a documented list of words or ideas can help to continue the conversation into a new context. Learners can be asked to apply the words they used for one work of art to a new work of art. At the end of a lesson, this collection of words and ideas can serve as a gratifying reminder of what learners have contributed and accomplished while at the museum.
