CHAPTER 20

February ● Present

Mark

“Any questions?” Peter, Price Corp’s C.F.O., asked during Monday’s staff meeting. A meeting I paid very little attention to. Thoughts of Lily ricocheted in my brain. It’d been like this since I walked out of her hotel room Friday morning.

“All good,” I told him. I wanted to ask how long I should wait before calling Lily myself. She texted me that she got home safely. But that was Friday. I gave what I thought was an appropriate, non-threatening yet reassuring response. Was I too distant? Too pushy? I’ve been dying to hear her voice for three days, to find out how she was doing, what she was thinking.

Last night, I’d tossed and turned. Memories of Lily’s taste on my lips, the feel of her in my hands played through my mind.

I shook my head. “Good job, everyone. Let’s have a great week, shall we? Peter, please, send me all the reports you mentioned in your presentation.” I hurried out of the conference room before anyone could stop me.

On the way to my office, I checked my phone. No new messages or missed calls.

I scrubbed a hand over my jaw.

An urgency to hear from Lily gripped my heart again.

I’d never felt so out of my element as I did right now. Communicating with women had never been a problem. I never went shy or quiet around a beautiful girl. But this time, it was different, because, well, because I cared. I loved Lily. I was more certain about that now than ever before, but I was terrified to push her away for good.

“Sir, your meeting with Mr. Zhao is postponed. His flight from Beijing has been delayed,” my assistant informed me via intercom, startling me from my thoughts.

“Thanks, Margaret, and, please, no ‘sir.’ Just Mark.”

“Okay, sir. I mean Mark.”

“Thank you.”

I spent a few hours returning emails and phone calls and watching the clock. The dread in the pit of my gut grew deeper by the minute.

I’d asked Lily to lay her heart on the line after I’d already broken it once. She knew the truth now though. She knew everything. My chest hurt with the silent fear that she had changed her mind and regretted our night together.

I’d been racking my brain since I left her hotel room, determining what my next steps should be. She’d asked for space, and I was giving it to her. But was the radio silence a mistake?

An idea popped into my head, and I pushed the intercom button.

“Margaret, I need to send flowers to my…friend in L.A.” A bouquet of white mophead hydrangeas like the ones that grew near the main building at Kingswood that Lily said she wanted to plant at her house one day. I wanted her to remember the good time we had together, to remind her that I hadn’t forgotten. “Can you find the best florist in L.A. and get me their number? I’ll deal with the rest myself.”

This wasn’t pushy, right? Lily had asked for space, and I would give it to her.
