Mr. Wickham,

I was pleased to meet you last week in London and I agree we have a common interest in taking down Mr. Darcy. I think we can extort money from him just by saying you compromised his sister, even though you told me you never did. It is too bad you were unsuccessful with her but after you have extorted all the money you can from the man you can give him the final punishment he deserves. From there on you can use your powers to convince his sister of your undying love and can marry her and eventually own Pemberley. I understand she is very pretty so you might enjoy jumping her bones but….

“That is all I will read today but you have the truth of it.”

Mr. Darcy told the men present that they have the letters that Mr. Howell and Mr. Wickham had exchanged and they would be used to defend Mr. Darcy in a trial.

The man tried to leave but other men gathered around him and continued to ask questions and badgered him until he finally turned away to return to Lambton. Before he left the other men told him they would defame him and his paper and write a story that tells the truth of the killing of Mr. Wickham. One man said he would not rest until the man had been tried as an accomplice in Mr. Wickham’s murder. In but a moment of sheer panic, Mr. Howell backed off and confessed of his involvement and promised to withdraw the story but no one present wanted to read his account and said they would write their own story and publish it in town.

Mr. Howell was red faced and looked as if he was about to have a heart attack but one of the reporters asked him if he had told Mr. Wickham about the trick of throwing dirt in an opponent’s face before a fight to blind the opponent but the man said he had not.

The man then read the letter that Mr. Wickham had received and it described that trick.

“You see, Mr. Howell, you are in great danger of being tried as an accomplice in a murder, but worst than that, you will be humiliated worst than your father.”

Mr. Howell next watched as Mr. Darcy approached him and he reached in his pockets and grabbed a handful of dirt and threw it into Mr. Darcy’s eyes as other men quickly restrained the man and the magistrate had the man taken away to Lambton.

The men had been shown the barn where Wickham had been killed and the magistrate asked the men who arrived at the scene to describe what they had seen and it was very graphic. There was just no way that Mr. Darcy could have killed Mr. Wickham for he was knocked unconscious by Mr. Wickham who had blinded him after throwing dirt in his eyes.

The newspaper men had enough to continue this story for many weeks but all were happy with the outcome.
