Helen Taylor’s Almost Legendary Pop Interview That’s Not Very Long And Has Only Got Lemmy In It. (Which took place at Jackson’s Studios, Rickmansworth, Herts, whilst mixing the ‘No Sleep ‘til Hammersmith’ live album).

Helen: Due to the fact that Motorhead were about to take off for America at the time we saw them, we couldn’t get them together for the usual interview. So the following is just an interview with Lemmy. The questions were made up of things you wanted to know, so here goes.

Helen: Is it true that your favourite all-time single is ‘I Have A Dream’ by Abba?

Lemmy: No, it’s not true at all. Actually, my all-time favourite single is ‘Catch A Falling Star’ by Perry Como.

Helen: How did it come about then? Did Radio 1 ring you up and ask?

Lemmy: I never said it was my favourite single to anyone.

Helen: So they just made it up?

Lemmy: Yeah, obviously they must have.

Helen: Is it true the sound level at a Motorhead gig is 10,000 Watts?

Lemmy: No, it’s 35,000.

Helen: Are you planning to do anything else with Girlschool?

Lemmy: Well, we’re doing a German TV show with them, and half way through the American tour we’re going out to Germany to do this Music Laden, but nothing apart from that as far as I know. We’ll probably stick the odd record out again, like the other one, from time to time. But it’s not gonna be regular or anything, because they’re getting cast as our eternal support band, which is not very good for them.

Helen: What do you think you’d be if you weren’t doing what you’re doing now?

Lemmy: A thief. I’d be a criminal of some sort. I’d be no good at anything else.

Helen: But did you ever want to be anything when you were at school?

Lemmy: Yeah, the usual stuff, engine driver. I was gonna be a farmer for a bit, but I couldn’t stay away from the bright lights and the bright women.

Helen: So you never actually trained to be anything?

Lemmy: No, except being a thief.

Helen: Are you ever going to do any cover versions of anything else, like the (ZZ Top’s) ‘Beer Drinker’s’?

Lemmy: I doubt it, no. I mean, we might do. You can’t say what’s gonna happen with things like that because we might just cover something. We might just suddenly realise that we all want to do something, absolutely aching terribly to do it, so we’d have to fucking do it. I don’t know, it’s just whether you come across anything you could make a worthwhile version of it. But we’re doing our own stuff now, I mean; we’ve got the Cockney Rejects doing our numbers!

Helen: Have you ever played with The Pink Fairies?

Lemmy: Yeah, I got on stage with them a couple of times; I think it was at the Roundhouse in ’75 or ’76. Did a hand-clapping, toe-tapping version of ‘I Saw Her Standing There.’ It was quite good, actually, I enjoyed it.

Helen: What books do you read?

Lemmy: Anything I can get my hands on, usually.
