THE WAGNER TRILOGY
Anton Seidl’s Lectures at Brighton Beach This Summer
A Novel Idea of Interpreting the Great Composer’s Masterpieces—The President of the Society Describes the Work Which Will Be Done in the Music Pavilion by the Sea.
The article took the form of an interview with the president in question: Mrs. Laura Holloway Langford, who called the lectures “the greatest educational feature of the season’s work,” and continued: “My little part will be all the more smilingly performed because I appreciate the value of Mr. Seidl’s exposition of Wagner’s method and ideas.”
The Eagle’s reporter ventured: “This one feature of the season, while looked upon as the most novel and attractive of all, has been commented upon with some anxiety, lest the size and openness of the music hall at Brighton may prove too much for the vocal powers of even a man.” Langford retorted: “No; the acoustic properties of the music hall are well nigh perfect.”
“But what if wind and tide are against you?” the reporter persisted.
“Wind and tide will not affect the music at the beach this summer and the precautions that will be made for the music will enable a speaker to be heard with clearness and distinctness. . . . The wall of the building on the ocean side will be padded.”
“Will not that be a costly and difficult thing to do?”
“We women, who are going to do it with the help of a man and a ladder and sufficient material, have not considered it a difficult matter.” . . .
“What promise have you of the success of the season?”
“The natural and inevitable result of persistent hard work, combined with the allied factors of public interest in orchestra concerts; a growing desire on the part of all sorts and conditions of people to improve themselves, musically and otherwise, and thus increase their enjoyment of life. . . . The four years of profit and pleasure afforded by Mr. Seidl and his orchestra there makes the prospect now one of almost sure success. . . . The benevolent work of the society is always upheld by generous hearts and willing hands.”
