CHAPTER FIVE

Marty Baber had come through with information about Donald Durnham. He lived in Denver, had spent time incarcerated for DUIs and some violent episodes. The man that Baber contacted said there were long periods of time during which Durnham’s whereabouts were not known. They had a current address, but it was an apartment and Marty doubted that he would be keeping Soldier there and not letting him contact anyone at home.

Officer Jansen and Marty had gone to airport security as soon as they arrived in Denver. Jansen explained the situation and they were allowed to watch the security cameras. They saw Soldier coming down the concourse and meeting a man. They slapped shoulders, smiling, and then turned. They got a clear picture of Donald Durnham. He asked the security officer to pause it and they both took pictures with their phones, repeating the process from different angles as the two walked. Right before they got to the outer doors they watched Durnham put his hand around Soldier’s neck and then Soldier knees bent and Durnham caught him before he fell.

Jansen looked at the officer and asked, “Can you switch over to outside cameras for this time period?”

“He used a pressure point technique to knock Soldier out. Watch, now he’s supporting him.” Now they saw Durnham putting Soldier into the side of a tan van. Jansen was already writing down the license plate number. Now Marty asked the officer a question.

“Can you call the car rental desk and ask them to speak with us? We figure Durnham canceled his rental, but we need to know if they have any information for us.”

“Yes, sir.” The guy called and got the information. Jansen and Baber thanked him and then headed for the rental desk.

They gave the clerk the bare details and asked their questions.

“Mr. Donald Durnham came to the desk to cancel the rental of Mr. Marsh’s car. He said that Mr. Marsh had taken ill and he was taking him to his home just outside of Denver. He even told me it would take them exactly two hours and forty-five minutes straight out Interstate 70 and up Highway 40. He was very talkative, going so far as to say that they had planned on roughing it and he hoped that poor Keith would be able to handle it.”

The team had rented two SUVs to follow the trail. They were going to use the directions the lady had given. Before they got out the doors, Bart stopped in his tracks, Jack running into him.

“Bart?” Jack said, looking at him. They all stopped.

“We need to get Soldier’s bags. He didn’t have them when that guy put him in the van. He’s going to need them when we find him.”

“Dude, good thinking,” Randy said. “You and Jansen should go get it. If they question it, maybe having him with you would help. We’ll locate the vehicles and pick you all up. I’m glad you thought of it.”

They all met up after Bart and Jansen got the two pieces of luggage Soldier had brought with him.
