Chapter Thirteen

Drew

Riley has been in Mexico for what feels like forever, and Jesse has been in a bad mood since the night at the bar. I blame Cyrus for forcing Jesse’s hand. Had it been a normal night out with PACHA nothing would be amiss. Cyrus touched me and security came, and then Riley wanted eyes on me because he had to have given security special instructions. How else would he have been tipped off that something happened. It was a bad game of dominos, and I couldn’t keep them from falling. Don’t get me wrong, Jesse is still into me, like every single night, but he always prefers my ass. I hate to admit that now I’m used to it, and I love it. He uses a vibrator against my clit to make sure I come, but sex with him lacks everything it has with Riley. It’s hard to explain, and I can only define it as sex I daydream about. PACHA never brought up Jesse ordering me to leave with him that night, and even if I have a fairly good idea why, it’s still strange.

“Drew, what’s the word?” my tutor repeats, sitting in the chair on the other side of my desk. We’ve moved to in person lessons every other weekday. On the off days I’m working with the design team on the remodel of my motel. To feel this much purpose and value in my days is new, but I don’t take it for granted.

I shake my head to break the haze. “Miss,” I reply after barely looking at the flash card. “The word is miss.”

“Good,” she chimes, smiling.

I’m learning to read and it’s working. After I was given the tools I needed, words came quickly. Right now, all I can think of is Riley Astor and the smile he flashes after I’ve said something that entertains him. I swallow hard and cross my legs. “I think I’m done for the day. I’m tired.” I rub my forehead and flip my phone over. No missed calls today. I open the text messages as my tutor gathers her books and cards and open Riley’s messages. I tap out ‘I miss you’ and punctuate it with a red heart and a sunflower emoji. The message before was him telling me goodnight with a moon. It makes my stomach flip.

Hensley pokes her head in the door after my tutor leaves. “You leaving?”

“I am. How late is it? I sent a remodel design to Amy; can you make sure it went through?” Hensley nods and comes around my desk to look at the email on the screen. Everything I do challenges in some way. Something as simple as an email, which most people have sent thousands of times by my age is work. I never get frustrated, and that’s a testament to those I’m surrounded by. They’re nothing but supportive.

“Looks good, it’s sent,” Hensley confirms. “You gotta be missing Riley,” she adds. “Are you going down to see the Mexican mansion? I’ve heard it’s spectacular in all the ways that count.
