IAN
Iâm standing on the balcony. Cold wind is whipping across my face but I need it.
I didnât expect coming to dinner would do this, but itâs changed things. Cal has what she has and itâs made it all the more real. It confirms what I knew all along. Things are different now. I canât be her friend. I wonât. I have to make her remember. I need to get her backâ¦sheâs Alana!
I hear the glass door open and I prepare myself to see her but try not to be so âintense,â as Blue calls it, but Iâm not in complete control of my mind right now. I admit Iâm running on only adrenaline and emotion right now. I have to convince her that sheâs mine, that we have a life together. If she can just fucking remember! But when I turn to see her itâs Lauren, not Alana. She leans on the railing next to me, her back to the cityscape, and glances over.
âAre you alright?â Thereâs genuine concern in her voice, and I try to push out everything I was about to let out on Alana. I laugh and grip my hair.
âNo. Iâm not.â I reply, trying to get a grip. She only nods and lets out a short laugh.
âI know exactly what youâre going through right now,â she utters quietly. I shake my head because I really doubt she does. Sheâs here, with Cal, and with babies on the way. Heâs not sitting next to her with no memory of their life and wishing he was someone else.
âIt might not seem like it to you right now but I went through hell to be here with him. To get to how we are now,â she says tensely, as if she just read my thoughts. I look at her more closely and when our eyes meet, for a second I see a glimpse of what Iâm feeling, and shitâ¦I wonder if sheâs still going through hell now.
âOh Ian. I wouldnât wish what youâre going through on my worst enemy, and you just found out two weeks ago. Youâre holding up a lot better than I was when I found out,â she explains quietly.
âAlanaâ¦is that how you know her?â she asks and I can only nod.
âShe doesnât know who that is,â she says firmly.âShe might not remember anything and probably doesnât want to. Youâre fighting an uphill battle that will be the hardest thing youâve ever been up against.â
âI want her back,â I say cutting her off. âAnd with all due respect, Lauren, I donât need to hear how fucking hard itâs going to be. It doesnât matter. Iâll fight every day if I have to. Sheâs mine and Iâm not going to give her up.â My tone is harsh but I canât hear yet another person tell me to let her go. I expect her to be offended but now sheâs smiling at me.
âThatâs what I needed to know,â she says gently, âbecause if you felt anything less of what you just said, itâs not going to be worth it.
