Figure 5.4. Interaction with U.S. and Other International Officers during Off-Duty Time

These results show that the international officers spent a good deal of their off-duty time with their U.S. colleagues and other U.S. citizens. Overall, 61% of the officers spent at least half of their off-duty time with U.S. people as compared to 32% that spent most of their off-duty time with their fellow international officers. In considering cross-cultural interactions, 93% of the officers indicated that they spent their off-duty time with either their fellow exchange officers (and their families) or with U.S. people. Only 7% of the officers indicated that they spent most of their off-duty time by themselves. These eighteen officers were evenly spread across all regions except Asia-Pacific, which only had one respondent in this category.13 Figure 5.5 shows the same data broken down by whether the officer came from a democratic or nondemocratic country.
