Torture.

That’s what this week amounted to. Sheer, undiluted torture. He’d been inundated daily with erotic images of Nora, each one more daring than the last. He should block her number. But what if she needed him? He knew better than anyone that she had no family to speak of and was on her own in the world.

If he blocked her number and something happened to her because she couldn’t reach him, he would never forgive himself.

Rock meet hard place.

He was aiming to do what was best for all parties involved. But that philosophy had gotten him nowhere. She kept sending him naughty pictures. Images he pored over and found himself looking at multiple times a day. He finally had to put a moratorium on looking at them at work; otherwise he’d be walking around with a constant boner.

His phone beeped as he entered his house through the garage.

It was from Nora.

He didn’t even have to check the name to know who it was from. He rarely received text messages. Normally his ex-wife and girls called him. Lana and Riley were young enough not to have a phone. They had yet to venture into the preteen, texting people constantly mode. Thank god. That was coming, and much faster than he was ready for.

Levi set his briefcase on the kitchen counter beside the Chinese takeout he’d picked up at Emperor’s Palace. His plans were to watch the baseball game and eat in front of the television.

He set his phone on the counter, avoiding it and her while he changed out of his suit into a pair of jeans and a tee shirt. He grabbed a beer from the fridge before trudging into the adjoining living room with the big flatscreen mounted on the wall.

Levi switched the game on and set up the wooden tray in front of his chair. And yeah, it made him feel like he was eighty instead of forty, but it was how he had been eating his dinners since he and his ex-wife split. On the nights his girls stayed over, they ate at the table as a family.

But other than that, it was just him.

Didn’t have to be. A vision of coming home to Nora in the kitchen, her belly round with their child, flashed in his mind. It was vivid and visceral and made him ache with wanting. Her hair fell in soft waves around her shoulders. And the smile she bequeathed him had everything inside him rejoicing at the rightness of the moment.

Shit. He stopped the fantasy in its tracks.

He wiped a hand over his face, trying to dispel the image. Not that it was useful at all. But at least he tried.

Levi put his dinner on the tray. And even grabbed his phone, placing it nearby on the end table. He planned to call his girls soon and tell them goodnight. He wasn’t able to do it every night because of work and their school activities.

He might not reach them tonight because they were in Florida with Julie and her husband.
