This makes a clear, radical statement. Mental health is presented as an overtly political issue. From this perspective, the treatment of people with mental health problems cannot be divorced from the social and political contexts in which it takes place. In addition, the psychiatric system is seen to form part of a wider system of social control that is a buttress to the wider economic inequality that has increased under neoliberalism. These approaches have much in common with the radical challenge that Basaglia posed to established mental health systems (Foot, 2015).
