Flying
I was frozen on the sidewalk.
Standing out front of the detective's office feeling the effects of drinking his blood, I felt the cool air blow around my body. I had forgotten how windy it was here. Drinking blood was amazing, it was different from eating food when I was a human. Just like eating, I felt full after drinking a man’s blood, but it also felt like I drank a lot of coffee. I could feel the life energy running through my body, it felt like it would push out my finger tips.
My emotions were jammed up like California traffic. I didn’t hurt the detective, but I came close to killing him; my excuse is that he pulled a gun on me. Of course I was threatening him, and I had no intention of leaving that office without the information on my father. It hurts my head to even think about dealing with my father. I was afraid to even open the file and see what information the detective had on him.
When I thought of David it was like someone stabbing me in the chest, or back was more like it. It has been the first time since becoming a vampire that I felt my heart, and all I felt was pain. David betrayed me, then I had betrayed David, but when I betrayed him I hadn't known he had already betrayed me. Thinking about it was giving me a headache.
When I became too stressed, there was one thing that made me feel better. I flashed over to the box truck and grabbed the sword hilt out of my bag. I could see Carrie in the front seat of the truck awaiting my return. By holding the hilt, she became more solid. I had asked Carrie to wait in the truck.
Carrie timidly asked, “How did it go?”
I showed her the files, “He has had the information.”
Carrie gasped as her hand shot over her mouth, “Oh… how could he?”
“I need to fly,” I slid the files into the bag. Strapping the bag over my back, I jumped into the air, letting myself go weightless. Carrie knew when I went flying not to bother me, so even though her ghostly form would follow, she would be silent and invisible.
There was an old building that had been turned into a movie theater. I landed softly on top of the metal scaffolding that held a large sign that simply said FOX. The sign looked as if it were from the fifties with the large letters that lit up with tube lights, different color lights scrolled around the letters. The building was across the street from the detective’s office, and it stood two stories high. In Banning, it was the tallest building.
Standing on top of the sign I could see across the valley and could tell that this spot was the highest point on the valley floor. Two mountains stood like dark shadows on either side of me. The lights of the house rolled out in front and behind me.
