Chapter 15

“Tell me you don’t live here,” I said.

“Yeah, I live here,” Jake replied. “Please tell me you’re not the one who just moved in down the hall.”

“I am. Zoe knows the landlord through work. Obviously, this means you’re going to have to move.”

“What? I lived here first. You’re going to have to move. Tell the landlord you’ve changed your mind. I don’t want to live near your crazy ass.”

“How do you think I feel?”

“Like you’re living in a secure building because there’s a police officer down the hall?”

I snorted. “Please. There are safer war zones out there than living next to you and your humpty-dumpty partner. You’re more Keystone Cops than Hawaii Five-0 as far as I’m concerned.”

The corner of Jake’s mouth curled upward. “You’re eventually going to have to let that go.”

“Yeah, I’m a big fan of glossing over police brutality.”

Jake rubbed his face with his hands. “I can’t believe this is happening. You can’t be my neighbor. Although actually, this suddenly makes a lot of sense. Is that your Jeep in the visitor’s lot?”

“So what if it is?”

“Well, someone reported a neon-blue jeep being chased down the beach by a Toyota Tacoma last night. When officers got there, the Tacoma was found floating in the ocean, but there was no sign of the Jeep.”

“Huh. It must have been someone else’s car.”

“Right, because there are two neon-blue Wranglers from the early nineties driving around this island.”

“How long have you lived here? I bet there’s at least five of them.”

Jake scowled at me. “Does this have to do with the fact that you’re investigating Jo Lismore’s murder for her father? Because we need to have a chat about that too.”

“Yeah, I’ve heard you’re not going to give me anything that might help with the investigation.”

“That’s because you’re not a cop,” Jake growled. “You’re not even a licensed private investigator. I don’t know who’s the dumber one of the two of you: the guy who hired an ice cream scooper to investigate his daughter’s murder or the ice cream scooper who actually said yes.”

“If you’re so good at solving murders, how come I was the one who figured out who killed James MacMahon? Especially since I’m just an ice cream scooper. That must be really embarrassing for you.”

“We were going to get there. But we have to gather evidence instead of going around half-cocked after murderers. I’ll remind you that you almost ended up dead.”

“‘Almost’ being the key word in that sentence.”

“No, ‘dead’ was obviously the key word there. You’re unbelievable. You don’t have any training in this sort of thing. Believe it or not, I don’t want your murder to be the next one I have to investigate.”

“And you’re not going to have to.”

“That’s funny, because from the reports I got last night, it sure sounded like it was close.”

“I’m standing right here in front of you though, aren’t I?”

“So, you admit it was you driving the Jeep that was chased down by the Tacoma.”

“I said nothing of the sort.
