Croagh Patrick is known as Ireland’s Holy Mountain and on Pilgrimage Sunday, the last Sunday in July, thousands of pilgrims make a three-hour climb up a sheer and slippery mountain slope where they attend Mass at the summit before making an equally challenging descent to the base of the slopes. A pilgrim who had just completed the climb for the first time on a cold, wet, and windy day describes her experience:

I didn’t start out looking at it religiously but about halfway up it became quite religious! It became absolute petition from there to the top. You know—get me to the top.
