Figure 3.1 The Dance of Communication (adapted from Gast and Taylor, 2002)

The dance recognises that there are several stages to establishing and maintaining an effective working relationship. After establishing the reason for the interaction and giving reassurances about the purpose and likely outcome, the conscious activities of ‘getting on the same wavelength’ follow: noticing use of language and trying to match it, spotting the level of energy being displayed and mirroring that and working to establish a suitable pace which can effectively engage with the service user. Service users with particular communication issues, such as learning disabilities, will require longer appointment times and a familiar environment in which they feel safe. Some elderly people may need to be asked whether they have their hearing aid in or whether they are particularly tired. Other service users may need to be checked as to whether they have had a seizure, are feeling particularly stressed or confused.
