The distance between the three pitches can vary, depending on the qualities of all the intervals contained in a triad. Four qualities of triads are possible: major, minor, diminished and augmented.

Triads derive from the combination of major/minor third and perfect/diminished fifth.

Later on we will discuss these topics in more depth.

The diatonic scale represents the HORIZONTAL expression of tonality, while the harmony is the VERTICAL expression of tonality.

Let’s now see how we can harmonize a scale.
