The Ghost Begins with Europe

“Let’s start by looking here on the European side of the pond,” the ghost began. “It is Exhibit 1 proving that TINA is false. The European model, often called social democracy, has great promise. Though still capitalist, it has attractive socialist and egalitarian features, and is a different system than U.S. capitalism. It is an important step toward social transformation.”

European Social Democracy

The European system was created by Marxist reformists in the early twentieth century. In The Communist Manifesto, Marx often supported unions and labor parties creating European Social Democracy as long as they held on to the long-term vision of moving beyond capitalism. He feared, correctly, that many would not.
