When you are in danger of great bodily injury or even death, the eye strike can be an invaluable, lifesaving tool. Because it can cause so much damage, though, its use should be limited to these very dangerous situations.

The Neck

The neck is also an excellent area to strike, with very sensitive areas to strike along both the front and back sides (see Fig. 198).

A punch to the throat can be a life-threatening blow. If it breaks the trachea, it can cause death.

A sharp blow to the back of the neck can also cause death or permanent paralysis. Again, make sure that you understand the implications of a strike to this area and make sure that you would be justified—within the guidelines of your department—in employing a strike to the neck.

The side of the neck is also an excellent place to strike. Many martial arts and defensive tactics systems include a strike to the side of the neck as a way of stopping an assailant. Depending on the force used in the strike, it can render an assailant unconscious.

Several years ago I watched a nationally syndicated police television show in which a criminal attacked a police officer on the street. The officer hit the criminal in the neck with his left forearm. The attacker was knocked unconscious. I still use this footage as a visual aid to show officers the dramatic effect of a well-placed neck strike.

A hammer fist or forearm strike to the side of the neck is one of the best ways to knock a person unconscious (see Figs. 199 and 200). It shocks the sensitive nerves that run alongside the neck and may disrupt the flow of blood to the brain.
