NESTING IN BED

Nesting behavior is a holdover from the time before dogs were domesticated. In the wild, dogs build a nest by crushing down the vegetation to make a hiding place in the undergrowth. Modern dogs do this by instinct with blankets, bedding, and so on, and they have no idea why they are doing it.

Why does a neutered male dog still hump?

Dogs do this as a sign of dominance. If a dog mounts another dog, he is showing his dominance over that dog. He wants to exert his dominance without a confrontation, and humping is easier than using his teeth.

Why do some female dogs hump?

Again, as a sign of dominance. If a dog allows him- or herself to be humped, it shows that the other dog is considered dominant. It’s nonconfrontational, and most dogs prefer to settle these matters without growling and snapping.

I have three dogs. How can I tell which one is dominant?

Certain dogs are dominant in certain areas. In my house, if all of the dogs are lying on the floor, Buddy can mount every single one of them—and he is much smaller than some of them. However, when they are eating, Garfield is the one who can nudge every other dog out of the food bowl. So Garfield is the dominant dog for food, and Buddy is a dominant dog just for the sake of being a dominant dog. When you have a group of dogs, their relationships are not quite as cutand-dried as we would like to believe.
