Doina, 47, civil servant

During the time of the dead one (Ceausescu) you could only find strange jobs.

One summer I picked raspberries. Another summer I worked at a pastry shop.

Then I went to college, but it wasn’t what I wanted. I wanted to become a French teacher.

But I went on to chemistry.

I want to stress that those who claim there was no unemployment during Ceausescu are lying.

I looked for a job in Baia Mare for several months.

The jobs I was offered by the employment agency, or its equivalent back then, were selling lottery tickets, or picking apples in an orchard.

I tried factories, chemical plants, I even tried the mines …

I graduated from chemistry high-school and had nearly two years of college.

I also tried a chemistry lab, but didn’t find anything. These were the only two offers I had.

Selling lottery tickets in restaurants wasn’t a way to earn a living for me, I don’t want to say it wasn’t a decent way since it’s impolite to those who did this job.

But it wasn’t the job I wanted or that represented me.
