Skills and experience

A large proportion of home cooks base their self-evaluation on skills and knowledge developed over their career of home cooking. A few cooks based their notion of themselves as cooks on years of cooking dinner night after night, without referencing specific skills or knowledge they may have gained through their experience.

Deanna, a family-first cook, described herself as an excellent cook and was confident in her skills on most cooking tasks: “I can make a new meal once and know the recipe by heart after that. I can also add to it and make it better.”

Elena is a keen and improvisational cook who makes everything from scratch and identifies as a “homemade cook … I don’t use any mixes ever.” As an empty nester, “I don’t cook as much as I’d like.”

Sara is a family-first and improvisational cook who considers herself “a farmhouse” cook. Her husband Daniel is also family-first and improvisational and considers himself an “efficient cook,” referring to his ability to utilize leftovers.

Jeremiah is a family-first and traditional cook who has an average set of cooking skills and identifies as a “practical cook. I am the person who is more likely to read the back of the rice box. I think I am pretty good at looking at what’s in the fridge to see if I can make something better.” He prefers tried and true strategies for making dinner and is “really into standard so I make a lot of the same things.”

Linda describes herself as a “very traditional” cook and was quite confident in her cooking skills; we likewise type her as a traditional and keen cook. Her husband Tony was equally confident in cooking; he specializes in making homemade Italian American food and makes and cans his own tomato sauce; he is typed as a traditional cook as well.

Helen is a keen, family-first, and improvisational cook. She reported a high level of cooking skills, which was reflected in her identity: “I’m a pretty competent cook.” In addition, she admits to being a “Food Network Junkie.”

Margaret is a traditional, family-first, and planful cook who considers herself a “good” cook and is confident in most culinary skills. When asked if she enjoys cooking, she replied, “I have cooked all my life, for my brothers and sisters, my fiancé and then my husband. And for my children. My mother died young. Cooking is like second nature to me.”
