At the Long Time and under the auspices of his company, Design Build Adventure, Jack weaves together architectural design, fabrication, project management, creative direction, and whatever else comes up along the way. The five-acre property includes a house that he uses as an office; an indoor-outdoor workshop for fabrication; and a baseball field that the Texas Playboys, the sandlot team he plays on and manages, calls home.

On Saturday morning, after breakfast tacos, a morning stretch, and a couple of hours of sketching and model building with cardboard and craft sticks, we settle on four projects—a mobile chicken coop, a sling chair, a sculpture/planter, and a combined turntable stand/record storage unit—and divide into teams to make them. Jack, Parker, and Dan circulate to help us as needed, and another helper, Austin-based singer-songwriter Amy Cook, arrives to oversee the portable band saw as we learn how to operate it.

I am on the sling chair team with Maura Ambrose, a quilter and natural dyer, and Maxx, a copywriter for an ad agency who is also an outfielder for the Playboys. Maxx says that as a writer, he spends a lot of time in his head, and he is looking forward to making something “real.” Maura was so hyped after day one that she showed up the next morning with a model using strips of the fire hose we pulled from the scrap pile the day before. By the time we’ve finished our chair, made out of steel square tube and that hose, Maxx and Parker are talking about starting a business selling what we are now calling the Sandlot Slinger.

Team Chicken Coop is made up of Zach, who works for a biotech start-up in Austin and renovates and rents out Airstreams on the side (“I would like not to have to pay people to weld on my trailers,” he says), and husband and wife Taylor and Katie, who own a jerky company that sources meat from farmers committed to regenerative practices; they have recently purchased a ranch, where they hope to put their welding skills to work. Adde, a lapsed fine artist turned art director in the publishing industry, is putting together the sculpture/planter on her own, but she accepts my offer to help her when I find myself with time to spare. Team Turntable Stand is composed of Jason (a software developer who wants to transition into industrial design), Alex (who works for HAAM), and Natalie (a brand manager for a hotel).
