Chapter 12

“YOU won’t lose me, I promise.” Cathal kept glancing

at Tomas as though reassuring himself that everything

was okay. That Tomas was okay, which was crazy as

he wasn’t the one who’d just got too close to that

bloody boundary yet again. “Just like last time?”

There was no mistaking the mix of concern and

fear in the question. Tomas decided to ignore the slight

tinge of not quite anger. After al, they’d gotten

distracted before he’d been able to share that little fact.

Behind them Ethan cleared his throat. “What’s

going on?” He was clearly not happy about this recent

development.

“I don’t know.” Cathal frowned, edging closer to

Tomas. “This isn’t supposed to happen.” There was too

much “not supposed to happen” going on of late. But

then he hadn’t known what would happen to his abilities

once he’d joined with Tomas either. “Tomas, why

didn’t you tel me?”

Tomas ran one hand through his hair. The other he

slipped into Cathal’s, linking their fingers together. “I

was more worried about you. It… I nearly lost you.”

Teling Cathal had been the last thing on his mind.

Having the man he loved in his arms and safe was much

more important. “Why would I….” He trailed off,

Cathal’s earlier words finaly registering. “What do you

mean the boundary wasn’t where you thought it was?

Property boundary lines don’t change, Cat, especialy

when they’re marked as clearly as these are.”

“You know where the old boundary lines are?”

Ethan’s eyebrow rose.

“Of course I do,” Tomas replied, more than a little

testily. “After what happened to Cat the other day, I

made sure I did. I wasn’t about to take any more

chances.” He placed his free hand on Cathal’s shoulder,

turning him so that they were facing each other. “I

thought you weren’t either, Cat.” What the hel was

Cathal playing at? Why take the chance and go

anywhere near it? He could have been kiled! “Even if

the bloody boundary had changed, you shouldn’t have

gone that close to it. Why did you?”

Ethan coughed. “I wanted some proof for al this

magic everyone keeps talking about. He did it to give

me some.”

“Fucking hel, Ethan!” Tomas shook his head.

“For once in your life, can’t you just take what

someone says at face value? This isn’t some big

scientific discovery that has to be proved with formulae

and experiments. Haven’t you heard of taking stuff on

faith?” Why the fuck couldn’t Ethan just believe them?

He and Tomas had been friends for years. Surely he

realized by now that there was no way he’d be lied to,

especialy about something as important as this.

“Dickhead.”

“I do take stuff on faith, and quite a bit more than

you’l ever know about.” Ethan glared at Tomas. “If

you’d get your head out of your arse and think about it,

perhaps you’d realize that I was concerned about you.

Al these stories about magic and some kind of

fairyland, what the fuck was I supposed to think?”

“That I might be teling the truth?” Tomas puled

his hand free of Cathal’s and crossed his arms over his

chest.

“Wel, I can see that now, can’t I?” Ethan took a

step closer. “I was wrong, okay? At least on this, but

I’ve not decided about the rest of it yet.” He snorted.
