Chapter Twelve

Molly returned to the kitchen. Agent Broome had not said another word but had left her to stew over what he’d asked. How was she going to get the camera out of the safe without revealing its hiding place? Should she do it? Would the camera tell them more? Oh, if only she and Emilie were alone and she could talk to her and ask her advice. She had to find a way to sneak into the study when no one was in there and get the camera if she decided to do it. And the agent was right. If the camera did what Desmond said it could, maybe it would show the person who was working for the Mafia on the inside, the traitor.

“You look tired, Cheyenne. Here’s a cup of tea,” Emilie said and gave her a brief hug.

“I am. I’m not physically tired, but I feel emotionally exhausted. In a few days, my life has been turned upside down. I feel like I’m living some kind of horrible nightmare, as if this were a movie replaying in my mind.”

“I understand. I feel much the same way, although to find out you’ve had Desmond as a father all those years must have been a shock. I couldn’t begin to imagine that one.”

“Here I was hoping that Gabriel could have solved it all on his own,” Molly said wistfully.

Emilie laughed. “You really have fallen for him, haven’t you?”

“Yes, but I don’t think he’s fallen for me.”

“Honey, he’s on duty. He has to behave himself. I’ve seen him looking at you and there’s more than a glimmer of interest in his eyes, believe me.”

“You think?”

“I don’t think. I know.”

“I’ve waited so long to meet the right man, to meet my soul mate, and he touches my heart and soul in a way no other man ever has. I feel it so strongly even though we’ve only seen each other a few times.”

“Have you had any serious relationships, Cheyenne?”

“Oh, I’ve gone out for a while with a few, but it never turned into anything. I just didn’t have that special connection with them. And maybe it’s because I didn’t come across.”

“Come across?”

“Go all the way.”

“Oh. Don’t tell me you’re still a virgin?”

“Yes, is that a bad thing? Hush, Jimmy is still here.”

“It just surprises me in this day and age. I’m talking softly. He’s too absorbed in his own thoughts. I’m sure he didn’t hear.”

“I just don’t want to give myself to a man I’m not going to spend the rest of my life with. I’m not an innocent by any means, but I’ve waited for the right man to give myself to, and preferably on my wedding night.”

“What wedding night?” Gabriel came into the kitchen.

Molly felt the blood rush to her cheeks. What else had he heard? She’d spoken softly so Jimmy wouldn’t hear what she said yet Gabriel had caught her words. She tried to compose herself. “Hi, Gabriel. What’s new? Have they found anything else?”

“I need to talk to you alone for a minute.
