CHAPTER FOUR
Lucifer
By the time Iâm doing a safety check on the jet, Iâll be flying to Colorado, Iâve heard nothing good. Ana hasnât called me back. Blake canât find anything worth knowing on the dark web. Our boots on the ground in Colorado canât get eyes on Ana. Theyâve even gone so far as to confirm sheâs not at the FBI offices. By the time weâre wheels off the tarmac, Blake is trying to use her cellphone to ping her location, and Iâve left her partner, âDarius the Dickhead,â a message, telling him sheâs in danger, which means he could be, too. In other words, my progress on saving Ana sucks.
Worse, the damn plane doesnât have internet.
I spend three hours in that plane, that should have been two, after a shit ton of turbulence forces me to take a detour from hell before we finally touch down in Centennial, Colorado, just outside Denver. My cell rings almost instantly, and while Iâm looking for a call from Ana, or even Darius, itâs Blake. âYeah, man,â I answer.
âHer phoneâs not pinging. Iâm guessing itâs off. Iâm going through the security footage to try and figure out when she was last at her office and how she left to put the traffic cameras to use. More soon.â
We disconnect, then I dial Darius, who once again doesnât answer my call, which could be because heâs undercover, or it could simply be the fact that he hates me almost as much as Ana does. I canât get off this damn plane fast enough. âHow are we riding out of here?â I ask Adam, whoâs still sitting shotgun.
âRiding dirty in a basic black sedan, man. Luke arranged it. Weâre set.â
Fuck yes, I think. âLetâs roll then.â
A few minutes later, Iâm finally in the backseat of the car with Savage at the wheel and Adam riding shotgunâonly weâre not moving. Weâre wasting valuable time, sitting on the tarmac with Savage waiting on me to tell him where to go. I punch in Dariusâ number again, and thank fuck, he picks up. âIâm not getting in between you and Ana. That ship has sailed.â
âWhere is she?â
âSheâs not my partner anymore. And I donât know where she is. Iâm telling you, manââ
In other words, he knows. âCall her. Tell herââ
âNo,â he says. âFuck no. Iâm not getting involved. Let me drink my beer and eat my pizza. I only answered to say no.â He hangs up.
I curse and ball my fist. âIdiot,â I murmur, thinking he too could be on the hitlist, and Ana will never forgive me if he ends up dead. I text him: Listen to the message I left you, dickhead, before I tap Savageâs seat and say, âDrive,â praying Iâm not too late to save Ana. And her dipshit partner, who claims to be her ex-partner.
